Everyone loves oatmeal for breakfast. Favoured for its protein and fibre, it’s widely known for it’s health benefits that include weight loss, lowering blood sugar levels and reducing risk of heart disease. But not everyone knows about it’s benefits for helping with anxiety! The carbohydrates found in oats help increase levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin has a calming effect and help to relieve feelings of anxiety, nervousness and even insomnia.
My anti-anxiety oat recipe is designed to combat anxiety and promote stress relief.
– Organic Oatmeal
Choose slower digesting steel cut and rolled oats slower which are way better than finely cut ‘instant’ oatmeal. Skip any brands that contain added sugar or flavourings.
Many consider it to be a superfood. It’s rich in vitamins and phytonutrients (plant nutrients), with a variety of antioxidants that are considered extremely beneficial for relieving stress.
– Almond chips
Not only are almonds healthy for you, but they can help relieve your anxiety. Almonds have natural calming properties and are fantastic for people suffering from depression, stress or moderate levels of anxiety.
Nuts are an amazing source of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and protein. All of these are crucial for healthy brain function. The omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA, help reduce symptoms of anxiety
– Dark chocolate or Dark raw cacao nibs
The majority of the health benefits of raw cacao are related to their high levels of the phytochemical theobromine. The combination of the phytochemicals theobomine and phenethylamine in cacao have been linked to increasing the serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain which helps to increase the feelings of well being, boost cognitive abilities, induce an aphrodisiac mood elevating effect!
-Dark chocolate also contains high amounts of magnesium. Studies are starting to find that magnesium may be one of the few nutrients that has a noticeable effect on anxiety.
Prepare your oats either overnight if you prefer a cool breakfast or cook oats as normal for a warmer option. Add toppings and enjoy!
